Don’t have your Apple ID password? Recover it at iforgot.apple.com before going any further. We can’t buy an iPhone that’s still signed in to someone else’s iCloud.
Before wiping anything, back up. You’ll thank yourself later when restoring to a new phone.
Either way, confirm the backup completed before moving on. Look at the timestamp under iCloud Backup or in Finder — it should match today’s date.
If you’re moving the same number to a new phone, you’ll need to plan this with your network.
For physical SIMs: Just pop the SIM tray out before you sell. Don’t leave it inside — your number, contacts, and texts could go with the phone.
For eSIMs (most modern iPhones):
⚠️ Forget this step and you may temporarily lose your phone number. Most networks can restore it, but it takes 24–72 hours.
Your Apple ID is tied to a lot more than you might realise. Sign out of these before signing out of iCloud (the order matters):
Why first? If you don’t disable iMessage, text messages from other iPhones may continue routing through your old phone for up to 30 days — meaning you’ll miss texts on your new device.
This is the most important step. Get it wrong, and we literally can’t buy your phone.
You’ll see “Signing Out…” for a minute or two. Wait for it to finish completely.
🔒 Activation Lock is the single biggest reason iPhone sales fall through. When you turn off Find My iPhone properly, you’ll see a confirmation. If your phone ever asks for “the previous owner’s Apple ID” — Activation Lock wasn’t disabled correctly.
If your Apple Watch is paired to the iPhone you’re selling, unpair it now:
Your watch will be backed up automatically before unpairing.
Now wipe it clean:
Your iPhone will restart and display the “Hello” setup screen in multiple languages. That’s how you know it’s properly wiped.
Important: Don’t set the phone up again under your own Apple ID. Leave it on the Hello screen — that’s exactly how we want to receive it.
